Why Are Dealers so Expensive for Car Repairs? Part Three

Advantages of going to a dealership
Although getting car repair service at a dealership is more expensive there are a few advantages. If you have a problem with a car repair you can take it back to the dealership and you can take it back to the manufacturer where necessary. When you go to a dealer the automotive mechanics have to provide factory-authorized instruction which means they are trained in a certain way and therefore have to do the work correctly.

When you buy a new car that is under warranty you have to take the car back to the dealership to make the car repairs if you want a free repair. A large dealership will have 20-30 mechanics so you may not get to talk to the one who worked on your car, but most won’t have to worry that the mechanic does not know how to do your repair.

A good idea is to compare dealer prices with several independent auto repair shops to see whether you can get the job done less expensively. You will most often find that independent car repair services will help you save money if the shop is a reputable one.

There are times when it makes more sense to take the car to a dealership than to an independent mechanic shop. One reason would be if the part is only provided by the manufacturer.

When you have a just out of warranty repair that needs to be done it may be a good idea to check with the dealer in this situation. The basic reason is because this may be a problem that many cars have in this area which would put you in line for a good will policy or secret warranty.

Independent Shops vs. Dealers
There are many independent shops that have mechanics that used to work at dealerships and will give you a similar quality on your car repair service. They can help you decide on where to take your local car repair and whether a specific mechanic shop can help.

You can also check with businesses that sell car parts if you are looking for a specific place to take your car. Many of the employees know the best city auto repair shops in the area and can steer you in the right direction. They will also tell you whether a dealership is reputable or whether you should pass them by.

There is a lot of information on the Internet too and in order to keep you from paying too much you can also check specific websites. As an example, check the website repair pal for an estimate and then check with the dealers.
