The market for HDTV televisions has managed to enlarge at blazing speed. Not only are many different models available, but there are different technologies that are used to power screens. Each one of these technologies has its own distinctive traits. Some of them have higher contrast while others are known for their long life spans. While there are in fact more than six screen technologies around including LED and LCoS, the ones that are most known and more common are LCD, Plasma and DLP. Of course, they all do the same thing but in a different way.
To a lot of people Plasma is synonymous to HDTV. They were one of the first technologies that entered the world of high definition. Even with the initial bad reputation that these sets had they still were able to capture a decent share of the market. In the beginning, Plasma screens were very fragile and could work optimally for only a few short years. These televisions have a contrast ratio that can only be matched by sets using CRT technology. Not to mention that they are not as prone to ghosting and other problems such as stuck pixels.
The leading technology in the HD world is LCD. LCD means liquid crystal display. Colors are usually very bright on them. They can last for many years if treated carefully. LCD are not prone to the problems that Plasma sets are and do not require as work to maintain in optimal conditions. However, the quality of the Tv is very dependent on the model in question. With these sets it is important to buy a good model since some sets from unknown brands give very bad performances. In general, most LCDs made by the big brands are of high quality. So as a general rule stick with the known brands if you decide to buy one of these.
DLP is another technology worth looking at. DLPs are very cost effective compared to the other ones. Usually, this technology is used to to create big rear projectors. In terms of image quality, this technology has a considerably lower image quality than the two before mentioned. There have been complaints about a rainbow effect that not all people but some, are able to detect on images that are being created by a DLP projector. Some people have reported feeling sick after watching movies on these.
These are the most important technologies in the HDTV world as of now. Which one is the best? Well, the answer is more depending on what are you actually looking for. It is all a matter of taste.
